Chicago-area doctors will conduct free asthma screenings next week, while the Westside Children's Asthma Partnership launches a new educational initiative.
On Sunday, Dr. Laura Rogers will perform asthma screenings at Lincoln Park's Century Shopping Centre, 2828 N. Clark, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
On Tuesday, World Asthma Day, Sinai Urban Health Institute and the Westside Children's Asthma Partnership are launching an awareness campaign called "Healthy Home, Health Child."
The program is enrolling families to participate in in-home visits to identify and eliminate asthma triggers. It aims to provide lasting education to families, and is supported by the Metropolitan Tenants Organization and Health & Disability Advocates, which will assist families with landlord or legal issues that arise.
Families can register on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Douglas Park Cultural and Community Center, 1401 S. Sacramento.
Asthma affects nearly 25 of poor children in Chicago, causing breathing difficulties due to allergens like pollen and dust.
