Those brave enough to trudge
through the sloppy remains of yesterday's snowfall will be rewarded
with greasy popcorn and rock & roll from three--count 'em,
three--great rock flicks. Behind the deco fab door number one
awaits The Who's beloved 1979 rockumentary, The Kids are
Alright. Hosted by Sound Opinions at the Movies, the film
flickers through the gorgeous confines of Southport's Music Box
Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m., the film starts at 7:30 and Sound
Opinions co-hosts Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis will stick around for
a discussion after it wraps. Those that haven't already arranged an
advance ticket through Chicago Public Radio can still nab one at
the box office.
Tonight's dusty
academic door number two gives way to 1982's favorite drug opus;
Pink Floyd The Wall. Presented by Columbia College, the rock
opera will be screened on the 8th Floor of Film Row Cinema at 6:30
p.m.. The showing occurs in conjunction with the Open Court release
of Pink Floyd and Philosophy, a book that three Columbia
Film & Video faculty members contributed to. During the
reception that follows, audience members will have a chance to
purchase copies of the tome and discuss the band's existential
nuances with the authors.
Are you of the "bigger is better" school of
reasoning? Get ye to Navy Pier's IMAX Theatre. After all, what's
not to like about a venue packing a sound system loud enough to
make little kids cry? It's too bad this concert-ready audio rig
isn't amping a seminal Irish rock group of some kind. Wait a
second, the ever-philanthropic U2 to the rescue! As the very first
live-action concert film, U23D gives you a chance to sit
front row at a U2 concert. Well, sort of. Impressive 3-D imaging
will certainly make it seem like you can reach out and snatch
Bono's sunglasses as he's bellowing out the chorus of "Sunday
Bloody Sunday," but don't go making a fool of yourself--it's just a
movie. Showings take place tonight at 5:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.
