Unidentified man pulled from Chicago River

A body pulled from the Chicago River shortly after 1:30 pm became a gruesome backdrop for the soccer game at Northside College Prep Sunday.Police responded to a call of a body floating in the river at 5530 North River Channel, directly behind the high school at Bryn Mawr. When officers arrived on the scene, the body was caught in the bushes on the east side of the river.

Sergeant Sacks of the 20th District said, 'Some guys in a boat saw the body and called 911.'

The Chicago Police Marine unit and fire department scuba divers were called in and pulled the body from the water.

The victim was discovered face down. Mud on the body made it impossible for officers on the scene to determine the victim's age or race.

A police spokeman later said the man was white and appeared to be in his fifties. There was no further identification.

Area 3 detectives estimated he had been in the water for about a week.A security guard at the high school said, ‘You could only see his shoes and what looked like a coat floating in the water.'

An off duty police officer, who had dropped her daughter off for the soccer game, was hoping it wasn't Paul Schuman-Moore, the former student who was recently reported missing from Grinnell College in Iowa.

"The kids sit on the bank of the river all the time."

The Medical Examiner will conduct the autopsy on Monday. It is currently being treated as a death investigation.
