Jorge is lifting 100lbs of solid iron in the weight section. His 6'4 frame, multiple tattoos, and been around the block persona doesnt't seem to phase the petite lady with the Northwestern Law School T-shirt and the I-Pod working the treadmill.

Welcome to the new McCormick Lawndale YMCA located in West Humboldt park, where an organization committed to community health and fitness offers a welcome alternative to the high priced and wattaged gyms and clubs located in our neighborhoods to the east and south.

This new Y boasts brand new equipment, basketball and racketball court, fitness classes and even babysitting for new moms getting back into shape. And did I mention the ample, free parking? Located on a large city block in a quiet mixed industrial and residential area, the Y is a bit hard to find, but tough to beat!

While there is no pool, if you join the Y you can have access to the many other YMCA facilities throughout the city.

Caveat emptor--CRUNCH it ain't. This is the old school YMCA with groups of grammar school kids participaiting in fitness class after school, and teenage girls popping in to try and sneak a peek at the cutest guys on the basketball court.

But if you're like me, an old school YMCA kid from way back, you will appreciate the community feel.

The McCormick Tribune YMCA is located at 1834 N. Lawndale (corner of Lawndale and Cortland.) Phone: (773) 235-2525
